NORC Older Adult Services

NORC stands for "Naturally Occurring Retirement Community." A NORC is a residential community or neighborhood where a significant proportion of the residents are older adults, typically aged 60 and above. Unlike retirement communities that are intentionally designed for older adults, NORCs develop organically over time as residents age in place.

NORCS are geographically defined either by the dimensions of an apartment building complex (vertical NORC) or by the boundaries of a neighborhood (Horizontal NORC). Brooklyn Neighborhood Services (BNS) administers a Horizontal NORC.
