Monthly First Time Homebuyer Workshop
Brooklyn Neighborhood Services offers a comprehensive First Time Home Buyer Program which incorporates home buyer workshops, one on one counseling, mortgage products guidance and community collaborations to promote affordable first-time home ownership opportunities.
This workshop is offered once per month via online video platform and lasts for approximately 1.5 hours. It is essential that every prospective homebuyer attends a First Time Homebuyer workshop/seminar prior to enrolling in a Home Buyer Education Course.
The workshop/seminar covers:
- The essential steps to buying a home
- Key questions prospective homebuyers should consider to determine if they are ready for homeownership
- Mortgage payment versus rent – similarities/differences; pros/cons
- Lending criteria of banks and mortgage companies for loan applicants
- Down payment assistance (for eligible first-time home buyers)
- Process of how a BNS HUD Certified Housing Counselor determines home buyer’s affordability
- Pros and cons of purchasing different types of homes (single vs multifamily)
- Condominiums/Cooperatives; the differences, formation, governance, common charges etc.
- Things to look for when reviewing a home inspection report
- Terminology the homebuyer will hear during the home buying process
- Post Closing – things to consider as an owner of a single family or being a landlord and the responsibilities of the owner/tenant relationship.
